DEFENDU

The self defence / arrest & restraint system developed in Shanghai in the 1920s by W.E.Fairbairn of The Shanghai Municpal Police (SMP) and immortalised in the now hard to find books Defendu - The Art Of Scientific Self Defence, and the reprint called simply Scientific Self Defence (now available from Paladin Press).
Fairbairn drew influences from
several systems when forming Defendu, including Chinese Boxing, Judo and Shinnoshindo Ryu Jiu Jutsu (see below).
Though not originally devised as a full - blown combat system, aspects of Defendu heavily influenced Fairbairn’s teaching in WW2.

DEFENDU is not taught as a full system to members of the public, nor the full
C. O. D. A. class.

TRAINING WITHIN C.O.D.A.

SHINNOSHINDO RYU JIU JITSU

One of the systems learned by Fairbairn in the early 1900s when an officer in the SMP.
Although virtually extinct, this system is still taught to a limited number of students via a training group that can trace its UK origins back to the early 1930s.

There are two distinct areas within Shinnoshindo Ryu - the original traditional system, and a higher level version.

Shinnonshindo Ryu Jiu Jitsu is
not taught as a system within CODA, but some of its influences are incorporated.
